So I have been accepted to give a presentation at CommunityOne, which occurs the day before JavaOne on May 5. I am going to talk about JavaScript + DOM patterns. I was going to focus on the JavaScript and DOM details around some common Ajax patterns such as those covered conceptually by Michael and Bill. Any ideas would be more than welcome!

Andre and I are also going to take part in the RedMonk CommunityOne festivities as much as possible as well which should certainly be a blast.

This is a bit of a digression but what a sweet picture. Ryan looks badass and Cote is all choked up!

After a relative leveling off of atmospheric methane levels, the US National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration released new figures indicating that there has been a large rise in global atmospheric methane levels over the past year. While certainly not a trend, it is something to keep an eye on. Atmospheric methane, coming from cows, landfills, forests, and melting permafrost, does last long in the atmosphere - thus the recent leveling off - however, it causes about 25 times more warming than carbon dioxide!

Dave Johnson will giving a talk on JavaScript and DOM Design Patterns at Community One.

There is a hole in the current knowledge and practice of user interface development, even though most Ajax developers confront UI development on a daily basis. Although design patterns have been around for a while, little attention has been paid to the HTML Document Object Model (DOM). This presentation uses several concrete examples to explore the need for and application of DOM design patterns.

This presentation shows why DOM patterns are consequential, given the complex and often misunderstood inte...

I`m certain by now that we`ve heard throughout the blogosphere about what happened to Blaine at Twitter. Regardless of the cries of "Rails doesn`t scale", it seems that this is the biggest thing to hit the Rails community since Zed`s pointless rant. Normally I don`t pay attention to most of the blogosphere, however since I know Blaine personally, and he`s someone who I can honestly say that I`ve looked up to over the past couple of years, as both a developer and as a friend, I think that the personal attacks based on a presentation where as a representative of a company, it is expected that ...

On the proverbial eve of our Q2 release I`m thinking about how far we`ve come with our components. We`ve been building components for 5 years or so now and I dont mind telling you that it took us a while to figure out that we are essentially in the business of making complicated things simple. That being the case I guess we have something in common with companies like Apple, Microsoft, Books for Dummies, Internet Dating sites, and the like. The hard part for all these guys is modeling complex real-world problems as software features, but their market success is driven by how well they package ...

OpenWebVancouver was a very interesting conference. It`ll be interesting to see all the presentations, and I enjoyed the Google Gears presentation, as well as the other presentations. I also liked the RIA with Open Standards presentation, as well as the keynotes by both Zak Graent and Tim Bray. I wish I could have seen the merb presentation again, and I regret missing Microformats, but I had other obligations in the afternoon that caused me to miss those presentations.

My presentation seemed to have gone fairly well. We introduced DogOnRails and talked about OpenMesh, Meraki and FON. I...

Someone told me about this post of Christian Cantrell`s (of Macromedia and Adobe fame) listing several incredibly handy AS3 libraries.

These free open source libs are as follows:

as3corelib: various utilities like advanced date parsing.
	as3exchangelib: talks to Exchange servers.
as3nativealertlib: a modal alert that appears in its own native window.
as3notificationlib: creates notification windows, and provides a layer of abstraction on top of OS-specific notifications.
as3preferenceslib: manages application preference persistence, including encryption when necessary.

It finally exists. After months of blood, sweat and tears of the FreeTheNet volunteers, we are now a society and we are ready to rock with our new Open-Mesh.com routers configured with our new firmware. We plan on being able to have the new Open-Mesh/DogOnRails routers ready for people to buy at the conference. This is pretty much what we`ve been waiting to get done for months, since this allows us to own things collectively, like network connections, and it allows us to pool our resources.

I`ll have info up soon for how to buy a Co-Op membership, and what the pricing scales are like for...
